We Shall Overcome 1964

Apparition 1964

These works were created while studying at School Of Visual Arts, on 23rd street in Manhattan. Late 1964

This image called "We Shall Overcome", is of an etching. I had been in Cleveland earlier that year and participated in a Freedom School. Also a singer songwriter, I preformed Old MacDonald’s Farm, We Shall Overcome, and a strange mix of children’s songs and topical "Protest" songs. That day was a joyous celebration and boycott of public schools making a statement about the sad state of civil rights depicted in the etching.

This image, also an etching called Apparition. It is typical of the works in that period. I was inspired by Hiram Coppleman. He was an amazing print maker. I believe he got a thrill out of dropping his profound abilities in to the hands of eager artists like myself. While he taught the traditional rosin dusting for aquatint, he also provided the sprayfix dusting alterative as well. He always demonstrated the respect for traditional methods but always encouraged experimentation. His enthusiasm for an undiscovered image was expressed in the ready arsenal of creative methods he delivered on a regular basis.
