Talking to God       Spanish

Talking to God (Hablando Con Dios)

You were in a tree screaming at God.
You wept bitter tears
For the suffering you had endured
As if your own pain wasn’t bad enough
This horrible compassion God inflicted on you
Under the guise of enlightenment.

“I feel everybody’s pain!…
Is this what you want?
You want me to absorb the emotions
Of all humanity?”

The tree creaked and it almost sounded like it was
In sympathy with you.
“There is only pain and a sales receipt”,
God is bar-coding our torment,
Encoding future generations with genetic guilt.

“I know you can hear me!”, God does not answer.
Only the wind across the leaves.
“I’ve put my whole heart into this life,
And you only reward criminals.”

I wondered if I should say something,
I remained silent. “I can’t go on like this!…
I can’t carry everyone’s burden,
I,”… your words choked off in sobs.

It’s not like that, I blurted out, You only have to live your own life!
Realizing I had intruded on your privacy,
I became silent again.
“Thank you,…at last you answer, at last, thank you.”
I quietly walked away.
