FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chakra art is now featured at the RiverArtGallery.com. River discovered Chakras in his early teenage years. His recent series of paintings on the theme started in 2014. The large scroll paintings, acrylic on canvas with vivid color explored cultural filters through which primal energy is experienced. "Tribe" "Tao" "Universal" are some that manifest these points of view. Works on paper and smaller stretched canvases are also part of the group. The works continue into 2020 exploring variations and personal interpretations. River sees "Energy Works" as a universal experience. He comments, "We all feel our being. These feelings are not cluttered by dogma, credos or advertising. Discovering our energetic self and the balance of well being is basic fulfillment." The art River creates are meditations evolved from his voyages. Chakra is the sanskrit for "disc" or "revolution". This describes centers in the body within which energies or "energy centers" transform. This idea is first recorded in some of the Hindu Upanishads. Chakras are found in sanatan/Hindu and tantric/yogic traditions and called Ch'i in traditional Chinese medicine. Dynamic interaction of color, shape, stroke, afterimage make these paintings excellent to ponder while practicing Hatha yoga, Zen Buddhism, Tai Chi, or Qigong. Without knowledge of the Chakra tradition, viewers intuitively find a meditative experience.

Foyer Gallery Lecture January 26, 2016

Glen River's lecture speaking on art and life was an extraordinarily dynamic and inspiring event. The introduction consisted of a brief biography, a description of attitudes towards his work, and ideas about the meaning of art. Interesting points included the typically wary attitudes of his family towards art, his attendance in art school, and goals of a young artist. It effected his early development and was in contrast with the artist’s current mature viewpoint. The therapeutic aspect of art was a process of self-discovery. It gives insight into the individual. Art allows each individual to be re-introduced to themselves in a non-verbal association which is uncommon. River stated, "Art rewards everyone who participates. It does not matter if you are a master investing a lifetime, or someone with only three hours on a Saturday afternoon. Art gives equally to everyone. It reconnects you with yourself."

The questions included; mixing color, which media is best for a particular project, how to restore a damaged work on paper, drawing and under painting, the properties of acrylic compared to oils, how to work in a series, the process of base colors and glazing, the relationship of big money and art, the experience of time and perception, the mythology of art on the human experience, how long to work on a painting, what sales and other people’s opinion has on your art, how art prices are arrived at, how purchasing groups and residual rights agreements effect art sales, and of course a few comments on last week’s purchase of Modigliani's "Reclining Woman" by a Chinese collector for $170 million.

Following the talk, we walked through the show where River answered questions about individual paintings. River's obvious dedication and joy in art is an infectious energy the listeners took with them. One was determined to make the journey from New Hampshire to Connecticut in order to attend his workshops. The retrospective show at the Foyer gallery sampled 50 years of River's work. The Hardy collection was 25 years in the making and includes over 80 works of art. This show also marks my decision to share the art with a widening audience. I look forward to future shows in which part of my collection will be included.

Cathedrals of Meditation

Art as object - The scroll as presentation style mimics the Chakra subject in that an ancient traditional form is used to express a contemporary vision.

The Chakra Energy series (acrylic on canvas scroll paintings) combines the abstract quantum concept as abstract and the figurative world. The formation of persona is effected from intersecting field-forms depicted by energetic patterns and the iconic formative symbol of the chakras. These ideas strive for the balance of universal dualities. Energy and matter, positive and negative, gravity and angular momentum, Yin and Yang, individual and totality.

Chakras are part of the subtle body, and meeting points through which the life force (prana) move. "The notion of energy as an underlying web to objects has been a consistent influence on my art. With the Chakra series I see Cathedrals of Meditation, I find these paintings excellent to ponder while practicing Yoga, Tai Chi, or Qigong.
