The Series

Just like a television show which is a series, a group of art works may be tightly or loosely based on a theme which identifies the group of works as a series. Also like a television show, a series may have a short life or continue for many years. Many artists enjoy working in a series for a variety of reasons. Sometimes an artist will like the outcome of a painting or print, but wonder what would happen with certain variations.

The two works to the left, Yale Campus 78, and Yale Campus 82, are examples of a loosely related series. They are both from a group called "Campus Portraits Of Yale." This unifying theme identifies the group of art works as belonging to this series. Similarly the next two paintings are from a series called "Manhattan Portraits."

A series within a series. If you click on either of the Yale images on the left you will see variations on these particular paintings. These variations become another tightly based series. This way of working has the advantage of exploring some of the many possibilities a completed work of art may suggest.

Art as investigation... Often artists become very interested in following up many avenues of discovery presented by art. This research and development establishes a rich foundation of knowledge that can be used in both a syntheses of a series, and a continuing reference relating to other groups of works.

The individual paintings in the series I describe as "Print Based Originals." They are originals because they are unlike any other. A print edition differs in that the multiple impressions are identical. The other difference is that the print based originals are mixed media. Usually a combination of the print and pastel, acrylic, and oil. The mixed media painting brings with it significant work in the artists hand.

More examples of the series may be found at the River Gallery.
