Saint Sebastian was a Roman who sympathized
with the Christians. His sense of Rome and
decency were outraged by atrocities committed
in the name of Roman interests. I used him as a
symbol of moral awareness in the face of war
fever. In those days bullies willing to mouth
slogans of hate passed themselves off as patriots.
My friends and I were caught up in the draft. We
had very serious concerns about what was
true patriotism.
In this painting Sebastian is declared an enemy
of the state. They have the documentation to
prove it.
